The Mona Sheepa 01.31.10

FAMOUS PAINTINGS THE WAY THEY WERE INTENDED #2: The Mona Sheepa is inspired by and dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, a brilliant artist of the the 16th century. If you're the kind of person who looks at this sheep in scorn and says:

"Oh dear, what a talentless hack! Copying someone else's painting, putting a sheep head on the body and then claiming at as her own, indeed... and with such tacky colors",

...then please keep in mind... I only have seven colors... and it's a whiteboard :) And the purpose of this is to make you say "Mona... Sheepa? Haha and it's a sheep head on a human body haha that is so humorous it causes tingly aching feelings in my sides. Haha."

Mona Lisa (also known as La Gioconda or La Joconde) is a 16th century portrait painted in oil on a poplar panel in Florence by Leonardo da Vinci during the Italian Renaissance. The work is owned by the Government of France and is on the wall in the Louvre in Paris, France with the title Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo.[1] It is perhaps the most famous and iconic painting in the world.

The painting is a half-length portrait and depicts a woman whose facial expression is often described as enigmatic.[2][3] The ambiguity of the sitter's expression, the monumentality of the half-figure composition, and the subtle modeling of forms and atmospheric illusionism were novel qualities that have contributed to the painting's continuing fascination.[1] It is probably the most famous painting that has ever been stolen from the Louvre and recovered. Few other works of art have been subject to as much scrutiny, study, mythologizing, and parody.[4] A charcoal and graphite study of the Mona Lisa attributed to Leonardo is in the Hyde Collection, in Glens Falls, NY (wikipedia)

Inappropriate Sheep Series: X-Ray Specs 12.30.10

X-RAY SHEEP! (so impressive.)

This wasn't really inspired by anything.. maybe Anthropology class... I drew it because I wasn't paying attention to the lecture. I'm not quite sure why anthropology might have given me the idea of perverted sheep?...

NOTE!!! I do not condone the use of x-rays by anyone (except a licensed professional) on any human, animal, or very life-like inanimate object.

"X-Ray Specs are an American novelty item, purported to allow the user to see through or into solid objects. In reality the glasses merely create an optical illusion; no X-rays are involved. The current version is sold under the name X-Ray Spex; an essentially identical product is sold under the name X-Ray Gogs.

X-Ray Specs consist of an outsized pair of glasses with plastic frames and white cardboard "lenses" printed with concentric red circles, and emblazoned with the legend "X-RAY VISION".

Viewing the "bones" of a hand through X-Ray Specs

The lenses consist of two layers of cardboard with a small hole about 6 mm (.25 inch) in diameter punched through both layers. The user views objects through the holes. A feather is embedded between the layers of each lens. The vanes of the feathers are so close together that light is diffracted, causing the user to receive two slightly offset images. For instance, if viewing a pencil, one would see two offset images of the pencil. Where the images overlap, a darker image is obtained, supposedly giving the illusion that one is seeing the graphite embedded within the body of the pencil. As may be imagined, the illusion is not particularly sustainable." (wikipedia)

Fairy Godmother Sheep 01.28.10

This is inspired by and dedicated to my godmother Faith < 3, whom I adore and who always remembers every significant date in my life :) I love her very much.

(Also: sorry it was a day late--my bad. I drew it yesterday, I just didn't post it until today.)

OM-NOM-NOM Sheep. 01.27.10.

This is om-nom-nom sheep!! I love this sheep so very much! Inspired by and dedicated my big brother Jake, because he not only called me out for yesterday's "sheep-fail" (or, from now on, "shail" or "feepil"), he also NOMs quite a bit. He is a habitual nommer.

Other famous NOMs (that I did not draw/photograph whatsoever):

(My personal favorite):
Another:

And, lastly, the official NOM VIDEO! You should really watch the entire thing... but the rodents/small mammals are way cuter than the cats&dogs.

Picasso Sheep 01.26.10

I'm blaming the "Fail"-ness of this sheep on the fact that I drew it in roughly 4 minutes after having woken up at noon. This was inspired by, but I won't shame him by dedicating it to, Pablo Picasso. To spare him the embarrassment, I won't even link information to him. Then again, you should probably know who Picasso was... he was a painter. He was actually a pretty big deal.

If you really want to know how big of a deal he was... Google "Pablo Picasso."

So, fail on today's sheep... But never fear!! There is an awesome sheep coming tomorrow!!! (Hint: teeth.)

When Sheep Hunt. 01.25.10

When the sheep go hunting... "Be vewwwwy vewy cawfo... we'ah hunting Wanunculus!"

Inspired by and dedicated to Bryan Perry... who likes very much to shoot things with bullets, arrows, and his fists. Yes, he can shoot his fists. He's that good.

(Also--just in passing-- "Ranunculus" is a real breed of flower... it's obviously in reference to Elmer Fudd and "hunting wabbits." And if you didn't get it? Go watch some REAL cartoons. Right now. Go.)

Sheep Goes AWOL. or Photo Shoot with a Catamount. 01.24.10

Sheep Goes AWOL. 01.24.10.

UVM Women's Basketball had a 65-44 (roughly) win over Stony Brook today, so yours truly was feeling the school spirit. "Sheep Goes AWOL" is inspired by and dedicated to every loyal Catamount <3.

As you can see, the attempted publicity photo shoot with Sheep and the University of Vermont Catamount did not work out so well. Sheep was intimidated, and went absent without leave. Bad sheep. Rallycat just wanted to play... Also, this is one of the only Daily Sheep to be drawn on paper instead of on the whiteboard. On paper, I can add more detail and color, but it takes a heck of a lot longer, so I usually opt for the whiteboard. Because I am lazy.

GO CATS!!

The Sheep 01.22.09

"The Sheep" 01.22.09 Inspired by and dedicated to Edvard Munch, the artist who painted "The Scream".

"The Scream (Norwegian: Skrik; created 1893-1910[1]) is the title of expressionist paintings and prints in a series by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, depicting an agonized figure against a blood red sky. The landscape in the background is Oslofjord, viewed from the hill of Ekeberg, in Oslo (then Kristiania), Norway.

Edvard Munch created several versions of The Scream in various media. The Munch Museum holds one of two painted versions (1910, see gallery) and one pastel. The National Gallery of Norway holds the other painted version (1893, shown to right). A fourth version, in pastel, is owned by Norwegian billionaire Petter Olsen. Munch also created a lithograph (1895, see gallery) of the image.[2]

The Scream has been the target of several high-profile art thefts. In 1994, the version in the National Gallery was stolen. It was recovered several months later. In 2004, The Scream and Madonna were stolen from the Munch Museum. Both paintings were recovered in 2006. They had sustained some damage and went back on display in May 2008, after undergoing restoration."

Unemployed Sheep 01.19.10

Unemployed Sheep. Inspired by and Dedicated to the 10% of Americans (not counting unlisted and those who simply ceased the search for a job) who are currently out of work. Thanks, Big Business and the Ever-Present Quest for Oil!

"Ba, Ba, poor sheep,
Have you any wool?
No sir, no sir,
And it's a load of bull.
One for the bankers,
One for the war,
One for the health reform
that's called for an encore.
Ba, Ba, poor sheep,
Have you any wool?
No, sir, f**k you,
It's a load of bull."

Stairmaster* Sheep 01.18.09

The Stairmaster* Sheep. Inspired by and dedicated to Wills 4. CBWC is smack dab on UVM's Central Campus, and Wills is the smallest building of the four, encouraging a tight-knit community because we all see each other so much.

Fun facts!
-Wills is the smallest dorm on campus. (I think--not really a literal fact.)
-We had a cockroach in the bathroom once. It probably ran away.
-Wills is lovingly known as "the shoebox". Or maybe not-so-lovingly.
-It is a time-honored tradition to attempt to steal the "W" from the "Wills" sign. We have not been successful... yet.

Gratuitous Sex Scene Sheep 01.17.10

I always hate when you're watching a perfectly good movie, and then WHAM! in comes the gratuitous sex scene to satisfy the need of post-pubescent teen males in the audience. NOW WITH SHEEP! Dedicated to Tony and Jake, because we had an entire Facebook-wall-post-conversation about sheep in Vermont.

Returning to UVM tomorrow morning! Are you SO ready for more sheep?!?! I AM!!

Domestic Sheep 01.07.10

Googled "sheep" with I'm Feeling Lucky button. Of course wikipedia would come up first!

Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are quadrupedal, ruminant mammals typically kept as livestock. Like all ruminants, sheep are members of the order Artiodactyla, the even-toed ungulates. Although the name "sheep" applies to many species, in everyday usage it almost always refers to Ovis aries. Numbering a little over 1 billion, domestic sheep are the most numerous species in their genus.

Sheep are most likely descended from the wild mouflon of Europe and Asia. One of the earliest animals to be domesticated for agricultural purposes, sheep are raised for fleece, meat (lamb, hogget or mutton) and milk. A sheep's wool is the most widely used of any animal, and is usually harvested by shearing. Ovine meat is called lamb when from younger animals and mutton when from older ones. Sheep continue to be important for wool and meat today, and are also occasionally raised for pelts, as dairy animals, or as model organisms for science. (wikipedia)
